David is in the stronghold, the Philistine garrison holding Bethlehem behind him, when he speaks a longing aloud for water from the well by the gate. Three of his mighty men hear it not as a wish but as a command, and break through the host of the Philistines to bring it to him. But David will not drink it. He pours it out before the Lord, for it is the blood of the men who went in jeopardy of their lives.
