Benaiah the son of Jehoiada is a man of great exploits. He strikes down two of Moab's mightiest men; on a snowy day he goes down into a pit and kills a lion; against an Egyptian armed with a great spear he goes down with only a staff, wrenches the spear away, and kills him with his own weapon. But the legend of Benaiah is not only courage — it is the steady, deliberate courage of a man who does the terrifying thing because it must be done.
