The King They Wanted

Israel asked for a king. Saul would spend the rest of his life discovering what it meant to become their answer.

Israel is tired of uncertainty. The surrounding nations have kings. They have visible rulers, organised armies and men who can ride at the head of battle. Israel wants the same.

Then Samuel finds Saul. He is tall, striking and initially reluctant—a man searching for his father's lost animals who has no reason to believe his journey will end with oil upon his head and the future of Israel resting on his shoulders.

The King They Wanted follows the rise of Saul from obscurity to Israel's first monarchy and explores the extraordinary transformation of an ordinary man into the answer to a nation's demand. At first, Saul appears to be exactly what Israel requested. He can fight. He can rally men. He can win.

But kingship introduces a new kind of fear. Every victory raises expectations. Every command from Samuel tests whether Saul believes authority belongs to him or merely passes through him. Every enemy becomes a threat not simply to Israel, but increasingly to Saul's possession of the throne.

And eventually a young shepherd begins receiving the songs Saul once thought belonged to him. The tragedy of Saul is not simply that Israel chose the wrong king. It is that the man they chose becomes increasingly terrified of losing the thing he never originally asked to possess.
