The Story
ENTER THE STORY
1997. The catastrophe readers have feared for four books. The full-scale Lattice test initially works — then runaway pressure begins. Shutdown fails; the emergency suppressive response worsens part of the problem. Greyfall becomes hours and days of impossible reality: buildings occupying contradictory positions, people disappearing rather than dying, technology reporting mutually incompatible data, crossing phenomena. Margaret Barrett disappears. The city survives partly through living Gifted anchors. The public demands an explanation.

Protagonist / theoretical physicist
Dr Julian Cross
The 38-year-old ungifted theoretical physicist and intellectual founder of Project Lattice. Brilliant, charismatic and ambitious; his fatal flaw is believing that if something can be understood, it should be used. His arc runs from discovery euphoria to prestige to negotiating with warnings to trying to stop what he helped build.
Gifted physician / human-subject advocate
Dr Amara Kessler
A 35-year-old Gifted physician and Source physiologist with a modest Biological Gift. She sees cumulative harm in the test subjects first and helps design early suppression as emergency medicine — creating a terrible legacy. Clinical, compassionate and impatient with ethics that ignore bodies.
National-security sponsor
Marcus Vaughn
A 44-year-old ungifted national-security representative who believes rivals will weaponise Source if Arden stops. Calm, politically skilled and capable of compartmentalised brutality. Becomes the architect of secrecy and Continuity logic without being a cartoon villain.
Gifted Resonant volunteer
David Serrano
A 29-year-old Gifted Resonant volunteer who can synchronise and amplify nearby Gifted. Funny, charismatic and impulsive — initially thrilled that his Gift is valued. His arc turns him from celebrated volunteer into a damaged human instrument, embodying the cost of Lattice.
Source mathematician
Dr Margaret Barrett
A 40-year-old ungifted Source mathematician and Helen Barrett's mother. Finds the resonance mathematics and Kestrel correspondences. Disappears during Greyfall with no confirmed body — Helen inherits her notebooks, absence and a 34-year obsession.
