The Story
ENTER THE STORY
1993-1995. Archaeologist Lena Ortiz leads the expedition to Kestrel / Site K-17 — an ancient complex beneath a remote plateau. The team finds Anchor burial remains, Source-reactive architecture, First Breach evidence and the impossible landscape. Modern researchers conclude the ancients built containment; Lena increasingly suspects they deliberately buried knowledge. The warning translation indicates the separation was deliberately managed — but its full meaning stays ambiguous. Kestrel geometry is authorised for modern aperture engineering.

Protagonist / theoretical physicist
Dr Julian Cross
The 38-year-old ungifted theoretical physicist and intellectual founder of Project Lattice. Brilliant, charismatic and ambitious; his fatal flaw is believing that if something can be understood, it should be used. His arc runs from discovery euphoria to prestige to negotiating with warnings to trying to stop what he helped build.
Archaeologist / comparative historian
Dr Lena Ortiz
A 31-year-old ungifted archaeologist introduced in 1993 who leads the Kestrel expedition. Discovers the ancient symbols are technical and functional, not merely religious. Core insight: we did not discover this — someone buried it. Warns that evidence is being misread.
Source mathematician
Dr Margaret Barrett
A 40-year-old ungifted Source mathematician and Helen Barrett's mother. Finds the resonance mathematics and Kestrel correspondences. Disappears during Greyfall with no confirmed body — Helen inherits her notebooks, absence and a 34-year obsession.
