The Story

Emily has discovered that survival can demand things a seventeen-year-old should never have to do. The family runs through temporary houses and anonymous rooms — but the hunt is no longer invisible. Owen Krale is coming. Surveillance feeds follow the family from place to place. Cameras turn refuge into exposure. An attempted upload that could expose Greybridge may instead tell Greybridge exactly where to look. Then the family is split. One seat becomes empty. And Ben discovers Greybridge has uses for people it does not immediately kill.

A 43-year-old mechanic and small-business owner who stops for a dying stranger and pulls his family into Greybridge's orbit. Wants to understand the problem, repair what is broken and keep moving — and breaks under Greybridge's interrogation.

A 41-year-old senior emergency-department nurse. Sees the danger earlier than Ben. Trained calm cracks under the clock; her blood is on her hands for reasons distinct from Emily's.

A 17-year-old whose attempt to expose the truth helps Greybridge locate the family. Her first kill is necessity; later violence becomes easier. She distinguishes her necessity-kill from Gabe's chosen execution.

A 38-year-old former military and Greybridge operator who left. The weapon who knows what Greybridge does. Gabe is no longer merely protecting the Harpers — he has been using the escape path to move toward Conrad, and his revenge becomes increasingly brutal.

Detective Susan Yang
A 36-year-old detective who discovers that the institutions she trusted may already belong to someone else. She makes choices that could destroy her career, and no longer knows who still belongs to the system.

A 44-year-old senior Greybridge operator and Gabe's former teammate. He wakes inside a mobile command center surrounded by screens and tracking data, hunting a man he once considered a brother. Owen is forced toward his own final choice.
